Eight people were killed and more than 20 others injured Monday when a bus smashed into a large outcropping of rock in southern Bolivia, police said.

Three of the dead were minors.

The crash happened near the spot known as Cieneguillas as the bus was traveling from the central city of Cochabamba to Tarija in the south.

Two of the injured were listed in grave condition at a hospital, police said.

Bolivia, one of the poorest nations in the hemisphere, suffers an average of 1,000 traffic deaths per year. EFE
