Five people from Bangladesh were detained by the Colombian navy in Choco, a province on the border with Panama, for being in the country illegally, navy spokesmen said.

The Bangladeshis apparently reached northwestern Colombia by entering from Peru, and they were headed for Central America.

The unidentified migrants were taken to Bahia Solano, where they were turned over to the immigration service, the navy said.

Colombian authorities have expanded security operations in the southern part of the country in recent years after detecting foreigners, mainly Africans and Asians, who entered the country illegally and were bound for Central America and eventually the United States. EFE
