Two anti-drug police died and another two were wounded Saturday when an armed group attacked their vehicle in the jungles of the Cuzco region in southern Peru, local media said.

According to the Web site elcomercio.pe, the ambush occurred at the town of Cielo Punku between the settlements of Kimbiri and Kepashiato, an area where security forces battle the remnants of the Shining Path guerrilla group allied with drug traffickers.

One police official told the Web site that the anti-drug agents were headed for Cielo Punku after receiving a tip that a laboratory there was producing illegal drugs.

Drug-traffic and terrorism expert Pedro Yaranga said on Radio Programas del Peru (RPP) that the attack also left one police commander and an unspecified number of agents missing.

Though the news has not yet been confirmed by official sources, the wounded have apparently been taken to the medical center in the village of Pichari and contingents of combined police and military forces have reached the area. EFE
