At least three people drowned and two others were injured when a small boat sank in Laguna de Perlas in Nicaragua's Southern Atlantic Autonomous Region, or RAAS, officials said, adding that 12 people survived.
The boat was sailing from La Cruz del Rio Grande to Bluefields, the capital of Nicaragua's southern Caribbean region, when it capsized due to a navigational error, navy spokesman Capt. Blas Hernandez Mendoza said.
Rescuers recovered the bodies of Maria Reyna Arauz, 32, her daughter, Yamileth Dormus, 13, and nurse Brenda Castillo, 24, who was pregnant, Hernandez Mendoza said.
The condition of the two people injured in the shipwreck was not released.
The navy sent two speedboats to the area to help the passengers and crew of the small vessel.
The navy is investigating the cause of the shipwreck, Hernandez Mendoza said. EFE
