A Dominican heavy metal drummer was stabbed to death in Santo Domingo in a murder than may have resulted from a case of mistaken identity.

Police in the Dominican Republic say the Jose Carlos Hernández was stabbed more than two dozen times by a group of men outside a bar where they were performing in the capital.

Hernández was from the Dominican Republic but lived in Argentina with the rest of the band, Exsanguination Throne. He performed under the name Asmodeo Nefast Drum Shiva.

Three men have been detained as suspects in the attack early Sunday and three more were being sought. One of the men was caught with a knife used in the attack and told police that they mistakenly thought Hernández was accused of raping a month ago a woman they knew.

Police say Hernández had no criminal record, according to Dominican daily Listín Diario

His mother described him as a kind man who loved to rock.

"He had a piercing, he had long hair, he liked black clothes, he was a rocker 100 percent, but he had a great heart," Maria del Carmen Hernández said at a memorial service on Sunday, according to Listín Diario.

"He was happy," the victim's mother continued. "He lived in Argentina and came to pass some time with his family. He was already on his way back to Argentina, where he has a rock band, but before he left he wanted to go that concert to say his goodbyes. What he found was death."
