Four brothers were killed in a car accident in northeastern Brazil while traveling to their mother's funeral, highway police said.

The four men aged 34 to 44 were in a vehicle that invaded the opposite lane for unknown reasons and collided Thursday with a truck on the BR-116 federal highway at a spot near the city of Jequie.

Another four children of the deceased woman who were traveling in another vehicle a few meters away witnessed the accident but were unable to help their siblings.

The eight had departed from different towns in the southeastern state of Sao Paulo and were heading in two vehicles to the funeral in Ibirataia, a town in the northeastern state of Bahia.

The accident occurred after nearly 20 hours of travel and when the victims were just 50 kilometers (30 miles) from their destination.

All of the victims were married and two of the men's wives were pregnant.

The accident stunned residents of Ibirataia, where both the woman and her four children were buried in separate ceremonies Thursday afternoon. EFE
