The security chief of the Villahermosa prison was gunned down Tuesday near the facility in the city of Cali, Colombian prison officials said.

Lt. Horacio Madachi de Avila was attacked as he walked to the prison, a bureau of prisons spokesman told Efe.

Madachi was shot seven times by a man riding as the passenger on a motorcycle and carrying a pistol with a silencer.

The security chief was shot two blocks from the Villahermosa prison and guards transported him to a clinic in Cali, the capital of Valle del Cauca province.

Madachi, however, was dead when he arrived at the hospital, the bureau of prisons spokesman said.

The security chief told co-workers that he had received death threats, but he never filed an official report, the bureau of prisons spokesman said.

Prison officials do not know who made the threats or killed the security chief, but they have opened an investigation.

The 48-year-old Madachi had been in charge of security at the Villahermosa prison, which is on the east side of Cali and holds 4,325 inmates, for nearly a year. EFE
