Three people were shot to death for unknown reasons in an attack carried out in a residential part of the district of Fajardo, on Puerto Rico's northeastern coast, police on the Caribbean island announced Thursday in a communique.

The police report said that the incident took place Wednesday afternoon when officers from a local Motorized Unit heard several gunshots in the Residencial Puerto Real section of Fajardo.

The officers dispatched to the scene found the bodies of three people, all dead of gunshot wounds.

The dead were residents of the neighborhood ranging in age from 19 to 32, and one of them had a criminal record for violating the Weapons Law and was suspected of several homicides in Fajardo.

The head of the Fajardo regional police, Commander Antonio Lopez, said that one of the dead was a suspect in the shooting death of a 20-year-old man two weeks ago in Ceiba, a district that is adjacent to Fajardo.

The commander emphasized that the investigation police launched into the incident is focusing on a possible settling of scores as the motive for the attack, but he made clear that they were not ruling out other angles. EFE
