(Updates with latest death toll, statement by police)

At least 10 people were killed and 20 others injured when a bus collided with a truck in Misiones, a province in northern Argentina, police said Wednesday.

The accident occurred Tuesday on Route 12 near the town of Caraguatay when the bus crashed head-on into a truck traveling in the opposite direction.

"We have 10 fatalities as of now" with five victims not yet identified because they were severely burned, Misiones police spokesman Claudio Ludtke said.

The two vehicles burst into flames, making it difficult for rescue workers to reach victims and complicating the identification of bodies, El Dorado police precinct chief Alejo Bermudez told the TN network.

The death toll could rise because rescue and recovery operations have not ended, Bermudez said.

The bus was traveling from the city of Puerto Iguazu to Posadas, the capital of Misiones. EFE
