A Mexican mother was arrested after allegedly gouging out the eyes of her 5-year-old son with her bare hands during a cult ritual, according to the Mexico City daily El Universal.

Carmen Rios García, 23, allegedly carried out the attack with her sister in her home in Nezahualcoyotl, central Mexico, on Thursday when the child refused to close his eyes during a prayer ceremony to prepare for the "end of the world."

Regional prosecutor Isaac Acevedo said García and her 22-year-old sister had gathered with a group of eight other people, including four children, to prepare for the "fatal day," which they believed was coming on Monday May 28, and the women attacked the boy when he would not join in.

A 17-year-old boy reportedly ran out into the neighborhood shouting, "They're killing my nephew," El Universal reported Friday.

Officers who rushed to the scene found Carmen García, who was apparently under the influence of drugs, carrying the maimed boy in her arms, covered in blood. He was rushed to the hospital in Mexico City and was reportedly in a stable condition.

According to preliminary statements, the family was part of a cult and said that they planned to kill the boy "to prevent the end of the world."
