A nine-year-old girl who was found stabbed to death in a California church parking was murdered by her own stepfather, who attempted to kill himself too, cops said.

The body of Xiomara Jonsales Fernandez was discovered Saturday morning on the ground beside her stepfather, Jacinto Trujillo, in a pool of blood outside the Los Altos United Methodist Church in Long Beach, KTLA reported.

Trujillo, 31, had self-inflicted wounds but was conscious and was taken to a local hospital, where he is expected to recover.

Nancy Eormurian, who discovered the bodies, told KTTV that she asked Trujillo who the girl was and he replied that she was his "other daughter."

Paramedics who attended the scene said Trujillo was babbling about life becoming too overwhelming. A container next to where the bodies were found was covered in graffiti, which investigators think was written in the girl's blood, KTTV reported.

Trujillo was placed under arrest on suspicion of murder, police said.

The slain girl's mother, Graciela Fernandez, told KCAL that her husband was never violent to her or her six children but added, "I don't want to see him. I never want to speak to him again."

Other family members told the TV station that Trujillo recently began acting strangely and using drugs.
