A shipping container with 900 firearms hidden inside was seized by authorities in the Mexican Pacific port of Lazaro Cardenas, the Navy Secretariat and the Attorney General's Office said in a joint statement.

The container arrived in Mexico from Turkey and was bound for Nicaragua.

The record arms seizure was made in an operation involving marines, AG's office personnel and customs service agents in Lazaro Cardenas, which is in the western state of Michoacan.

Authorities found 154 9 mm pistols, a 7.55 mm pistol and 756 12-gauge shotguns inside the container.

The container and its cargo were turned over to federal prosecutors, who will conduct the investigation.

The operation was part of a larger effort to crack down on arms trafficking and prevent drug traffickers and other organized crime groups from acquiring weapons, the AG's office and the Navy Secretariat said.
