Eight children were killed Friday when their school bus ran off the road and plunged into a ravine in northern Ecuador, media outlets said.
The crash took place at 2:30 p.m. near Concepcion in El Carchi, a province bordering Colombia, a police spokesman told Efe.
He said that though police were at the accident scene, it was too soon to provide definitive casualty figures.
Media accounts spoke of eight children dead and 11 others badly injured, while suggesting that additional kids could still be trapped in the wreckage.
The children were on their way home from a school in the neighboring province of Imbabura, Radio Publica reported.
