A couple and their 5-year-old son died when a wall collapsed on them as a result of the rains currently lashing Nicaragua, authorities said Monday.

The head of emergency management, Luis Acosta, told Efe that the incident occurred Sunday night in Masaya province, 28 kilometers (17 miles) south of Managua.

The victims were 23-year-old Francisco Tijerino, wife Elizabeth Vanegas, 20, and their son Angel, he said.

Acosta said that the three died when a wall in their home gave way to the force of the rain, collapsed and crushed them as they slept.

He added that emergency management teams saved the lives of the couple's other two children and two of their nephews.

With these three deaths, the number of fatalities during the current rainy season rose to 14, including three victims of electrical storms, according to Acosta's agency, which also reported 62 homes flooded by the rains on Nicaragua's Pacific coast.
