Trial has begun for a 14-year-old who stunned the world after he was accused of being a young Mexican hit man.

The boy, identified only as Edgar and known as "El Ponchis", was arrested in December and faces up to five years in prison if convicted on murder charges. Authorities said the boy, who was born in San Diego but grew up in Mexico, confessed to killing four people whose decapitated bodies were in Cuernavaca, south of Mexico City.

The trial that opened Monday is being held behind closed doors for security reasons.

His arrest came at a time Mexico was talking about a YouTube video that appeared to show other Mexican adolescents posing with dead bodies and weapons.
