Fourteen people died violent deaths over the weekend in Puerto Rico, police said Monday, as homicides continue at a pace of more than three a day.

Authorities say the murders stemmed both from domestic violence and from turf wars among gangs battling to control key points for selling drugs around the island.

The latest 14 murders raise to 621 the number of violent deaths in Puerto Rico so far this year, which adds up to 98 more slayings than in the same period last year, an increase of 18.7 percent.

The most notable incident over the weekend took place in the town of Caguas near San Juan, where two young men were gunned down Saturday afternoon in what appeared to be a settling of scores between gangs.
