Madrid – An Air Europa flight from Madrid to the Canary Islands had to turn around after one passenger stabbed another in the face with a ballpoint pen, airport authorities told Efe Monday.
According to officials, the airliner took off from Madrid's Barajas International Airport at 8:45 a.m. Sunday and returned to the terminal about 45 minutes later.
They said that the passenger, who was arrested when the plane returned to Barajas, stuck a ballpoint pen in the cheek of another traveler, sparking an uproar on board.
Two police officers who happened to be on the flight tried to restore order and calm down the aggressor, who nonetheless persisted in his violent behavior.
Nor would the attacker modify his attitude when he was taken off the plane, pushing and shoving the agents who came to take him into custody at Barajas, which led to his arrest.
The man in custody, a 49-year-old Spaniard, was taken to a Madrid hospital for a psychological examination.
The airliner left again for the Spanish archipelago off the coast of Africa almost an hour after the incident was resolved.
