A woman tried to smuggle her husband, who is serving a sentence of more than 20 years for various crimes, out of the prison in Chetumal, the capital of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, in a suitcase, police said.

Maria del Mar Arjona Rivera tried to carry the heavy bulging suitcase containing her husband, Juan Ramirez Tijerina, out of the prison at the end of her conjugal visit last Friday.

The 19-year-old Arjona Rivera, who is pregnant, was arrested and two inmates are under investigation in connection with the escape attempt, prison officials said.

The young woman was taken to the general hospital in Chetumal on Monday due to stress-related complications with her pregnancy, but she is now in stable condition, prison officials said.

Arjona Rivera will be taken back to prison once her condition improves to await trial on charges of aiding her husband's escape attempt, officials said.

Inmates helped Arjona Rivera carry the suitcase out of the conjugal visits area, but she was spotted by guards struggling to move the heavy piece of luggage, which supposedly had only dirty clothes in it.

Guards noticed that the woman was extremely nervous, stopped her and opened the suitcase, finding her husband inside, wearing just his underwear and socks.

The guards burst out laughing when they found the inmate twisted around to fit in the suitcase and barely able to breathe.

Aiding the escape of a prisoner is a minor crime and Arjona Rivera could get off with just a fine.
