Actress Skye McCole Bartusiak, who played Mel Gibson's daughter in "The Patriot" (2000), died over the weekend at her home in Texas, her family said. She was 21.

Bartusiak died in her sleep on Saturday and the cause of death has not been determined, Variety reported.

She had roles as a child in "The Cider House Rules" (1999) and "Don't Say a Word" (2001).

"We lost our girl," the actress's mother, Helen McCole Bartusiak, told CNN. "She was a kind and really beautiful girl."

Skye, who had suffered from epileptic seizures in recent years, was preparing to produce and direct her first film, her mother said. EFE
