San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro said he will dye his hair blond to honor a promise he made to members of a local high school basketball team,

Castro, a rising star in the Democratic Party, told Fox 29 television that he made the promise during a visit last fall to Lanier High School, where a student asked the Mexican-American mayor to pledge to dye his hair blond if the Lanier Voks qualified for the playoffs.

The squad clinched a playoff berth last week and the mayor said he will fulfill his promise.

"Hopefully the students will learn two things," Castro said. "First of all, that when you give your word you keep it. And secondly, that we care so much about them out in the community and want for them to succeed. And we're going to be there cheering their success on the basketball court and in the classroom."

Castro, who in 2012 became the first Hispanic to give the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, did not say whether he would sport his new look in public. EFE
