Santiago, Chile – Maria Jesus Matthei, niece of presidential candidate Evelyn Matthei, was elected Miss Chile and will represent her country at the Miss Universe beauty pageant to be held in Moscow on Nov. 9.
"I decided to enter this contest because I've traveled a lot, I'm a cosmopolitan girl and I love beauty contests," Matthei, 21, said in a statement published this Monday in the daily Las Ultimas Noticias.
"It was my dream to win and I did it. I'll arrive in Russia perfectly prepared," the model said Sunday night after being named Miss Chile in a ceremony at a Santiago luxury hotel.
Her aunt, ex-labor minister in the government of President Sebastian Piñera, is representing the incumbent right-wing coalition in the Nov. 17 presidential election.
Evelyn Matthei is currently trailing in the polls behind former President Michelle Bachelet, the candidate of a broad opposition alliance.
Cecilia Bolocco, in 1987, was the only Chilean to win the Miss Universe title in the history of the pageant.
