MINNEAPOLIS – General Mills is teaming up with a civil rights group to help get Latino parents more involved in their children's education.
The Minneapolis-based food company's Box Tops for Education program is partnering with the National Council of La Raza, or NCLR. The partnership is called "Committed Parents: Supporting Your Child's Success."
Box Tops and NCLR have created a Spanish and English language toolkit for Hispanic families to use throughout their children's education. Organizers say 21,000 printed copies have been distributed to schools and NCLR affiliates to give to parents.
Box Tops is holding a series of parental training workshops in May and June at Los Angeles, Houston and Chicago schools with large Hispanic populations.
Created in 1996, Box Tops for Education gives families a way to earn cash for their schools by clipping coupons from such brands as Cheerios, Betty Crocker and Pillsbury.
