Spanish soccer star Gerard Pique played an Innocents' Day joke on his 4.7 million followers on Twitter with a message early Friday announcing the birth of the baby he was having with singer Shakira, only to acknowledge hours later it was a joke.
Day of the Innocents, observed Dec. 28, is the April Fool's Day of the Spanish-speaking world.
Shortly after midnight Thursday, Pique tweeted, "Our son has been born! We are very happy! Thanks to all for your messages!"
In no time the announcement of the birth was re-tweeted and the news reached a number of online news media in Spain and Latin America, though they received the news with a certain caution due to the date and above all because of the FC Barcelona player's reputation as a joker.
And so it was. Soon after noon on Friday, the boyfriend of Colombian singer Shakira sent another tweet to clear up the situation about the birth of their firstborn: "It has a name! His name is Innocent! Happy Innocents' Day to all!"
The couple's child is due in February. EFE
