The holidays are to be spent with family and friends, and it's a time to be thankful for our accomplishments throughout the year. It's also a time to show appreciation to those who have helped us get there.

Below, you'll find what's customary to tip certain professions, according to a recent Consumer Reports poll. These are not etched in stone. I'm sharing these to give you a hand when calculating what to tip. Always keep your budget in mind.

Tipping for Home Services

Sometimes, I wish I could be more “handy” and be able to fix more stuff around the house. I have no skills, however, so I rely on the services of contractors and the like.

- Babysitting - One night's pay and a small gift from the child(ren)
- Garbage Collector - $20
- Landscaping worker - $25
- Newspaper delivery person - $20
- Handyman - $20

Tipping for the Deliveryman (or woman)

USPS and Fedex do not allow their drivers and mail carriers to accept any cash tips (at any time.) However, they can accept gift cards or other gifts up to a certain value.

- USPS – up to $20 in value
- Fedex – up to $75 in value
- UPS – there's no policy

Tipping for Other Services

Here is a list of services where it's customary to tip one session cost:

- Haircare
- Nails
- Pet groomer

Remember these are just guidelines. What to do if you just don't have the cash? Give them a hand-written Thank You card, or consider a homemade gift. A little detail can go a longer way than giving nothing at all.
