This week on Being Latino on Facebook we questioned whether Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. is waging a war on immigrants after firing over 400 of their Minnesota workers at the end of last year. Immigration continued to be a hot topic as we covered the rally at Georgia’s University State campus where undocumented students marched for their dream: a right to an education.

The march resulted in the arrests of the several students who bravely risked deportation as they revealed their undocumented status. Though undocumented, they were raised in the U.S. and identify as American and feel the government is failing them.

Cultural identity is important, and for some Latinos that can be a confusing thing. Do we identify with our Latino roots or do we identify with being American? How does one decide? But it’s not just Latinos who identify with multiple cultures: There are also Gringos who identify as Latino, such as the writer of Growing up Southern to become a Gringo Latino, whose Southern roots and rearing helped him to identify with Latino values.

One Latina living in the South agreed:

“Originally fm NYC, I came to the South after living abroad for a couple of yrs, and will leave again overseas next year, and I can tell you without a doubt I will miss the varied people of the South and its rich culture. I've learned plenty from them, as they have from me (especially wanting to learn to speak Spanish!)--Speaking for myself and my family, our experience here was memorable.”

Identity is a complex thing as we rely on various aspects of our lives to define ourselves, including what we do and where we work, which leads us back to Chipotle and their firings. If you no longer identify with your job but aren’t ‘lucky’ enough to work for Chipotle, do not despair – you too can learn how to get fired!
