Mexico City – Federal agents nabbed four men in connection with the apparent abduction of 40 people who remain missing more than a year after boarding buses bound for the United States, the Mexican Attorney General's Office said.
The missing people were seen for the last time in March 2010 in the central state of San Luis Potosi riding on two buses, the AG's office said in a statement.
Families of the missing persons reported that the four accused asked them at the time to pay $100 for each of their captive relatives in exchange for letting the buses continue on to the United States border, plus another $1,800 as a "service fee."
The criminals told family members that the 40 people were being held by a crime gang and warned them not to report the fact because they knew all about them, who they were and where they lived.
They also asked the families to wait "patiently for the release" of their relatives, but up to now their whereabouts remain unknown, the AG's office said.
