A 33-year-old brain-dead pregnant woman was disconnected from life support Sunday by John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, in compliance with a court order upholding the wishes of the woman's family.

Marlise Muñoz was disconnected from life support at 11:30 a.m. and can finally "rest in peace," the attorneys representing Muñoz's husband, Erick, said.

"The Muñoz and Machado families will now proceed with the somber task of laying Marlise Muñoz's body to rest, and grieving over the great loss that has been suffered. May Marlise Muñoz finally rest in peace, and her family find the strength to complete what has been an unbearably long and arduous journey," the attorneys said in a statement provided to Efe.

The family had said from the start that it wanted Muñoz, who worked in the health care field, disconnected from life support because she had expressed that wish in conversations about the issue of end-of-life care.

The judge sided with the family on Friday, but the hospital debated whether it would appeal the order.

"This was a family decision," a hospital spokeswoman told Efe. EFE
