An 18-year-old woman who was expecting twins got a big surprise when she gave birth to triplets instead at a hospital in Tegucigalpa, Honduran media reported.
Saira Lopez is back home and resting after giving birth last Thursday via C-section to Meibelin, Alejandra and Elizabeth at the public Hospital Materno Infantil, a hospital spokesman told media outlets.
The hospital spokesman did not say how big the girls were at birth, but he confirmed that both mother and babies were in good health.
"We did not know it was three, the ultrasound only showed twins. The surprise came when I got to the hospital," Lopez said.
The triplets' father is Aldiver Torres, an 18-year-old unemployed construction worker.
"This is a blessing from God, but we are not prepared to welcome these three girls because I do not have work right now, but I am willing to help them get ahead," Torres said.
The parents have asked the government and private donors for assistance for the babies due to the extreme poverty in which they live. EFE
