British researchers say it's protein, not sugar, that helps boost your alertness and also burns calories.

They compared how nutrients affect cells in the brain known as orexin cells.

Analysts say amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, stimulated these cells more than any other nutrients.

The team says these findings help explain why people seem to feel less calm and more alert after meals that are high in protein.
