A young Argentinean girl who had traveled to Bolivia became the first dengue fatality in Argentina, officials said.
The girl, who was 13, lived in the Argentine city of Cafeyate “but was infected in Bolivia during the carnival celebrations” the government said in a statement.
The girl had been hospitalized since Monday in hospital in Cafeyate, and was transferred to a public hospital, where she died of dengue. The cause of death was confirmed by a laboratory.
A government official said the girl must have contracted dengue during a Bolivian carnival in the neighborhood of Nuevo de San José de Pocitas, where there was a small dengue outbreak.
There have been 93 cases of dengue in Argentina this year, but the girl was the first reported death.
There has been 5,700 of dengue cases in Bolivia and 5,104 dengue deaths in Paraguay this year.
Dengue, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, is an infectious tropical disease that causes fever, headache, skin rash and can lead to death. There has also been thousands of dengue cases in Brazil this year.
