For some, the holiday season is an opportunity to take a break from the norm and travel to an exotic destination. What better way to ditch the cold than to check out Puerto Rico? MY Lifestyle Magazine was recently invited to an event for foodies at The Culinary Loft in New York City showcasing the spectacular and flavorful cuisine, coffee and rum that travelers can expect during a visit to La Isla del Encanto.

Celebrity Chef Mario Pagán prepared a number of gourmet delicacies from his native island. Known as the owner of the restaurants Laurel and Lemongrass in San Juan, and for his appearance on the hit Food Network show “The Next Iron Chef,” Pagán served up sample dishes like Bacalaito chips with aioli, smoked salmon alcapurrias and pork belly yucca mofongo.

“When you put your love into it, I think that’s Puerto Rican food,” says Pagán, after serving guests.

The curious foodies also sampled top Puerto Rican rum and espresso from the island's own Cafe Lucero. Here’s saluting our Latin roots these holidays with a lot of flavor.

We are excited to bring you our “Best of 2012” series through the end of the month, recognizing people, events and news that made headlines this year. This week, we honor MamasLatinas.com and seven Latinas that this organization honored in New York City earlier this fall, including Dawn Diaz of Milagros Day Worldwide organization for survivors of domestic violence and many more.

The awards were a blast, hosted by Cuban-American Actress Maria Canals Barrera. Felicidades to the creators of MamasLatinas - Actor Andrew Shue, Lucia Ballas, Johanna Torres and their team for inspiring.

Before we wrap up this week, MY Lifestyle Extra recognizes the contribution and impact that Singer Jenni Rivera had on us all as Latinos. The tragic deaths of Rivera and her team in a plane crash in Northern Mexico has saddened our whole team. The world will truly miss “La Diva de la Banda.”

Managing Editor Carlos Anaya was the first reporter to interview her on stage after she spoke to a group of fans and journalists about balancing life as a mother and musician at the 2012 Latin Billboard Awards festivities in Miami earlier this year. Rivera also sang to Anaya on the red carpet before the awards. Check it out here as we honor Jenni.
