Actor Julian Gil returns to the small screen in "La Que No Podia Amar" (The Girl He Couldn't Love), the new version of the successful 1980s telenovela "Monte Calvario."

And he's playing a part he can say nothing about until the series goes on the air Aug. 1 in primetime on the Univision network. Why all the mystery?

"I'm playing a new character that didn't exist in other versions of the novela. He's called Bruno Rey and it's a part designed to give the plot even more passion and intrigue," Gil said in an interview with Efe.

After his successful performance in "Eva Luna," one of the most-watched telenovelas in history, the actor was eager to return to the medium with a character that would challenge his acting skills.

"The character's personality is a surprise that I can't reveal - I can only say that he fights for the love of the main character," said Gil, who will share top billing with Ana Brenda Contreras and Jorge Salinas in the new production.

"I'm interested in growing as an actor, and I want to do things that are daring and different," the actor, who has played all kinds of roles from heartthrobs to priests to transvestites, said.

Gil, born in Argentina and raised in Puerto Rico, began his career as a model on the leading runways of Latin America. But his heart was always in acting.

"I started in 1995 on the stage with the play 'Por el Medio si no hay Remedio' (Through the Middle if There's No Better Way), and since then I haven't looked back," he says.
