Agencia EFE on Monday launched, a Web site showcasing the history and the contemporary reality of the largest news outlet in the Spanish-speaking world.

Using photographs and dispatches from EFE's archives, the site evokes some of the most important news stories over the years since the agency's founding in January 1939.

The portal also highlights EFE's plans for celebrating the anniversary.

The main event is set for Feb. 13, when a host of prominent figures will join EFE for the inauguration of its new headquarters in Madrid.

In May, EFE will mark its 75th anniversary with the opening of a major exhibit in Madrid recounting the agency's history.

Besides telling the story of EFE, the exhibition will track the evolution of Spanish and Latin American society since 1939, with images, audio recordings and clothing that evoke earlier eras.

For people who can't visit the exhibit in Madrid, EFE is organizing a traveling exposition of 75 years of the agency's most important photographs that will make stops throughout Spain and Latin America.

A section of the anniversary Web site, "EFE in Images," recounts the agency's trajectory through photos of offices, equipment and journalists in action over nearly eight decades. EFE
