Retired U.S. Air Force officer Graciela Tiscareño-Sato has written the first bilingual children's book about women who serve in the military.

The book, entitled "Buenas noches Capitan Mama" (Good Night, Captain Mama) is based on a chat that Graciela had with her own son the night before a Veterans Day event at his preschool.

"This is the first book in English and Spanish about the role of women in the Armed Forces," Tiscareño-Sato told Efe in a telephone interview.

The story is based on the military career of this Latina, the daughter of Mexican immigrants who served as a USAF navigator and contingency planning officer after graduating from the University of California at Berkeley.

"My son came into my room and began asking me what each insignia on my military uniform meant and I began to explain to him what I was doing and why I was doing it, (and) when he left the room he smiled and said to me, 'I love you, Captain Mama,' marching and giving me a military salute," the author recalled.

Tiscareño-Sato said that it was very important for her to write this book in Spanish, as part of her Hispanic roots, because she wanted both parents and children to be able to see the very positive things that women can come to do in this country.

"Within our culture, at times it is expected that women will play 'traditional' roles such as getting married and having children; this book shows that they can also wear a military uniform, go to the university, become an officer. I want to inspire boys and girls to follow their dreams," Tiscareño-Sato emphasized. EFE
