Italian designer Marco Zanini has been named the creative director of Schiaparelli, the fashion house said Monday.

The 42-year-old Zanini held the same post at Rochas until last Wednesday.

Schiaparelli's hope is that Zanini can return the fashion house founded by Elsa Schiaparelli, a surrealist designer and contemporary of Coco Chanel who closed her workshop in 1954, to glory.

"For me, the emotional link with this project is very strong and reflects my admiration for the intelligent and innovative personality of Elsa Schiaparelli," Zanini said, adding that he hoped to "revive the incredible esthetic of this iconic fashion house."

Schiaparelli is entering a new phase in its life as it prepares to return to the runway at Haute Couture Week in January 2014.

The fashion house was rudderless for many years after Schiaparelli's death in 1973 but began reviving itself in 2006, when Gruppo Tod's, owned by Italian businessman Diego Della Valle, acquired it. EFE
