Latin designers, including Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta and Narciso Rodriguez, will be showcasing their creations at New York Fashion Week, which begins Thursday, while Argentina promotes its country brand.

The huge fashion event got its unofficial start on Wednesday, when American designer Michael Kors received the 2013 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion from the The Museum at FIT.

"Winning this prize shows how far the concept of sportswear has come," Kors said after receiving the award from actress Hilary Swank.

Oscar de la Renta, Valentino and Karl Lagerfeld are among the past recipients of the prestigious prize.

Kors will unveil his Spring 2014 collection on Sept. 11 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

De la Renta will be one of the veteran Latin designers showcasing new collections in New York, with Carolina Herrera, Narciso Rodriguez and Angel Sanchez also unveiling their latest creations.

Argentina, meanwhile, was invited to promote the country brand concept with seven designers.

Emerging designers Ricardo Seco and Rolando Santanda, both from Mexico, and Colombia's Edwing D'Angelo will have an opportunity to show the fashion world their take on design. EFE
