Looks like Gerard Piqué pulled a fast one on everyone, and it wasn’t on the field.
Shakira’s boyfriend insisted Thursday the couple welcomed a son–or did they?
“Our son has been born! We are very happy! Thanks to all for your messages,” tweeted the Spanish soccer star. “We have a name! His name is Inocencio! Merry Day of the Holy Innocents to everyone!”
If the name sounds a bit unusual, there is a reason and it’s not because the twosome are opting for the usual bizarre celebrity baby name. Gossip blogger Perez Hilton, who may have fallen for the joke after posting headline "Shakira Pushes out Baby Boy", noted Piqué’s native Spain is currently celebrating Day of the Holy Innocents, or “Día de los Inocentes,” which is a holiday similar to America’s April Fool’s Day when people play practical jokes and create false stories for fun.
A representative for the 35-year-old Latin pop singer and the much younger 25-year-old denied the baby was born.
"Shakira is sleeping. She's calm," her spokesman, Rodrigo Beltrán, told the media. "The baby is expected to be born in the beginning or the middle of February."
In November, Shakira posted a photo of her growing belly on Twitter, taken via Instagram, where she and Pique appeared happy in each other’s arms.
“I could have another 9 months like this!” Shakira wrote in Spanish.
That same month, Piqué spoke to Catalan radio station RAC1 about rumors in regards to what the name of their child will be.
“Concerning the name, we just haven’t been able to decide,” he said. “There are ridiculous names, like Ulisito, that came out of the press’ need to report nonsense. There was also Biel, which we like, but I don’t think it will be that one either, or Gerard. We’ll see.”
In September, Shakira announced via her website that she and Piqué were expecting their first baby.
The pair met in 2010 while shooting a video for Shakira’s song “Waka Waka This Time for Africa)” for the South Africa World Cup.
