San Juan – Salsa stars Cheo Feliciano, Ruben Blades and Roberto Roena, reggaeton duo Calle 13 and rapper Tego Calderon pay tribute to Tite Curet Alonso in an album featuring new recordings of the Puerto Rican songwriter's greatest hits.
The project "Sono, Sono... Tite Curet!" (He Played, He Played...Tite Curet!) will be divided between a television documentary on the life of Curet (1926-2003) and a disc that will also have performances by Omara Portoundo, Trina Medina, La 33, Andy Montañez & Lalo Rodriguez, Cultura Profetica, PVC, Danny Rivera and Kiani Medina.
The documentary will air simuntaneously on Puerto Rico's main TV channels on Dec. 5, with the album going on sale the next day.
Cultura Profetica's Omar Silva, musical director of the tribute album, told Efe that this has been "a learning experience" thanks to the chance it has given him to work with artists whose music he grew up listening to.
"Obviously what Tite did was create international hits. And this challenge of doing new recordings of his songs, they're doing it with a lot of respect. That was the basis of the work," Silva said during the recording of the song "Franqueza Cruel" (Cruel Frankness) at a studio in San Juan.
