This week on Being Latino on Facebook we went from talking about the coconuts of last week to making piña coladas; in other words, a blend of wonderful flavor.
Perhaps it’s a fitting metaphor for Latinos. We are as different as we are alike, but together we make a great blend of beauty, music, and culture.
And just as we begin to identify who we are as a group we are called to action; called to be agents of change for ourselves so that we can improve our level of educational attainment. Through education we can improve economic status and take our rightful seat at the table with the decision makers.
A seat at the table would allow us to be a voice for those who are not allowed to have one. Those who are often not allowed some basic human rights simply because they showed up unexpectedly at America’s doorstep in search of a better life, thinking the American dream we brag about so often could be theirs too.
But again, that change we so desperately need will only come through believing that we are its creators. In the words of one of our generation’s biggest agents of change: “Stay hungry, stay foolish.” RIP Steve Jobs.
